Frequently Asked Questions

Should I get local money or do they take other currency? What about ATM machines?

The Tanzania shilling, British pound, and US dollar are prevalent in Tanzania and most places will take the currency you have available. This excludes the remote areas however. There are ATM machines but be aware that they will dispense the Tanzania shilling. We recommend that you carry your cash on your person at all times and never leave cash in your hotel or safari vehicle. We also recommend to bring mostly small denominations when bringing money from homes.

Will my mobile phone work in Tanzania?

Mobile phone coverage is quite good in Tanzania. The cost of using a different carrier can become expensive, so many people will purchase a local SIM card to use in their phone while there. They are inexpensive and readily available, as well as the pre-paid phone cards to use with them. Your guide can lead you through the process.

Is the water safe to drink in Tanzania?

No it is not safe to drink. Bottled water is provided in your vehicle for game drives. Additional water is readily available to purchase at the bar in your camp or hotel as well as bottled water for brushing your teeth. This is a holiday and you do not want to risk becoming ill.

What about electricity in Tanzania?

The voltage is 230/240 and the plugs are standard 3 square prong UK style. You may need to bring a voltage converter as well as plug converters. There will be chargers in your safari vehicle for passengers to make use of them for cameras, laptops, iPads, etc. while out and about. As there will not be chargers in your tent, there will be a central area where items can be charged. Lodge rooms will have electrical plugs available for use. Keep in mind that some camps operate on solar power but will have a backup generator. If you have medical equipment such as a CPAP machine, make sure to tell your safari consultant so they can make prior arrangements with your lodging.

What if the vehicle breaks down while on a game drive?

The office in Arusha will be notified and a replacement will be dispatched immediately. It is possible that a simple repair can be accomplished on the spot and it becomes a short delay.

What if my luggage gets lost on the way there?

We always recommend carrying a change of clothes in your hand luggage if possible. Upon arrival you should report this to your international carrier and it is their responsibility to send the luggage to the location you will stay. It would also be best to leave a copy of your itinerary and your guides phone number with them just in case. You can also ask your guide to take you to a store in town for purchases before leaving for the bush.
